An album recorded to accompany a book that I co-wrote.
I sing backing vocals on one of the songs entitled, Winding Roads.
This happened...
More than one hundred women in music including myself were invited to tell our stories in a book about sexual injustice in the music industry. Some of the women include the voice of Dora from Dora the Explorer, Lavender from the movie Matilda, Lady GaGa's dancer, Selina Gomez's keyboardist and many more. Based on my hashtags a few weeks after I joined Instagram, I was approached to write an essay for the book which is by multi-Grammy award winning producer, Devine Evans. After we all submitted our essays about our personal experiences in the music industry for the book, we spent a day at Henson Studios in Hollywood in the room where We Are The World was recorded during the 80s. We had our makeup done by a hair and makeup crew for the Warrior photoshoot. During our shoot we were visited by Randy Jackson and Justin Timberlake.
A few months later, the book launched as part of a pre-Grammy party at the Avalon in Hollywood. To accompany the book, we recorded an album and I sing on the song Winding Roads. Later that year, the album was long-listed for a Grammy which was exciting! Those who attended our book launch included Janelle Monae, Spinderella, Vanessa Simmons, Kristinia DeBarge, Music Producer Focus, Angelique Bates and many others. All the girls got to sing backup for Wondaland Records recording artists, St. Beauty after several rehearsals graced by Janelle Monae's presence and several more hours in hair and makeup.
Every one of these women have a story to tell and gave so much of their time and effort to be a collective voice. Reading their stories is profound and thought provoking, heart wrenching and empowering. The whole experience was a bit surreal and unique from anything I’ve done musically before, but felt if my message could reach someone and help them somehow, even just one person, then all of this was worth it.
